I'm an aspiring costume designer. Theatre would be an excellent starting point for me but I doubt I'll find a smooth way to get into the industry without any connections. Ultimately, my dream would be to have a career like Colleen Atwood's. The woman is a genius and working for Tim Burton would just be... [adjective overload]
In the mean time I can be inspired by all the super amazing people there are out there who are doing super amazing things.
Today, about half an hour ago, I discovered that Dazed and Confused [a magazine I'd heard of but never paid attention to] has an online magazine type thing... as most magazines and newspapers these days do but I thought it was cool. I read 'Rookie Mag' religiously and their 'Saturday Links' section today linked to their story on Iris Van Herpen's latest couture collection.
I'd read about it in MX the last time I was in Melbourne, where they absolutely took the shit out of it. I actually thought the designs were really edgy and cool but 'whatevs if they don't like it than no one must'. WELL I WAS WRONG. Reading the article in which Van Herpen was interviewed and looking through the gallery attached, I realised just how interesting and fresh her designs were. It's no real surprise that she has dressed singers such as Bjork and Lady Gaga.
I mean, they're created using a 3D printer for crying out loud. Here are a few of the garments I particularly enjoyed from her collection.
She looks as though she's been rolling around in snowflakes... so cool.
This crystal-like creation is stunning. It reminds me of a geode amethyst on a pixie.
The fine, white, precise points contrasted with the black fabric just looks incredible. It's otherworldly.
[Am I turning into one of those fashion bloggers? I'm not sure, I mean I've had an interest in clothes since forever but maybe that's normal. Hmm, I'll see...]
